Dr. Chisari is Professor and Head of the Division of Experimental Pathology in the Department of Molecular and Experimental Medicine at The Scripps Research Institute, in La Jolla, California. His laboratory studies virus-host interactions in hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus infections.

Dr. Chisari received his B.A. magna cum laude from Fordham University in 1963 and his M.D. from Weill Medical College of Cornell University in 1968. He trained in internal medicine at Cornell University and at Dartmouth Medical School and in immunopathology at the NIH and the Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Anatomic Pathology.

Dr. Chisari has received many awards and honors including the Ernst Jung Prize in Medicine, the Rous-Whipple Award from The American Society for Investigative Pathology, the Distinguished Achievement Award from The American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He is an elected member of the Henry Kunkel Society, the Association of American Physicians, the Institute of Medicine, and the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Chisari holds many patents related to antigens derived from hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses and he has published over 300 reports and reviews pertaining to these two pathogens.
